Everything you need to know about calculating VAT and using our free tool.
Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax placed on a product whenever value is added at each stage of the supply chain, from production to the point of sale. The amount of VAT that the user pays is on the cost of the product, less any of the costs of materials used in the product that have already been taxed.
To add VAT to a net amount, multiply the net amount by the VAT rate (e.g., 20% = 0.20) to find the VAT amount. Then, add the VAT amount to the net amount to get the gross amount. Our calculator does this instantly when you select 'Add VAT'.
To remove VAT from a gross amount (to find the net amount), divide the gross amount by 1 plus the VAT rate (e.g., 1 + 0.20 = 1.20). The result is the net amount. The difference between the gross and net amounts is the VAT. Select 'Remove VAT' on our calculator to do this automatically.
